The atrium must be separated from the remainder of the building by a 1-hour fire barrier. The second exception is that sprinklers are not required to be installed in the ceiling of an atrium that is more than 55 feet above the atrium floor. This is not usually pertinent since the building will normally have to be fully sprinklered for other reasons having to do with area and height limitations and construction type. The first is that portions of a building separated from the space containing the atrium by a 2-hour fire barrier are not required to be sprinklered.
